Chapter 14

Brice

I left Suzette’s place early on Sunday. She had plans to meet her best friend Denise at her church. I showered and headed to my place. I had a lot on my mind but the anger had somewhat subsided.

Being able to talk everything through with Suzette really helped. I was stunned to find out the CEO of the company I work for was intimate with my mother. I remembered seeing that pompous ass walking out of Suzette’s office that day like he had just been scorned. Alistair Cromwell is, by reputation, a lecherous asshole. What could my mom possibly see in a guy like him – and the bigger question was – when did she start seeing him?

On Monday, I still didn't go to work because I had requested the entire week off for Thanksgiving and I had the rest of the week to think about this mess.

I sat down at home, still devastated about my parents. The room was lit by the soft glow of the table lamp in the corner, casting long shadows that crawled across the walls. Evening came early in November and the sun had left the Western sky by five o’clock.

My frustration grew, and I clenched my jaw. "Not simple? Mom, I saw you with him. I have the pictures."

She hesitated before replying, her voice softer now. "How do you know his name, Brice. There were no introductions on Saturday.”

“Under the heading of small world or better yet, disgusting small world, do you know who I work for, Mom?”

“Of course I do, Honey. It’s that cellphone company. Um, the one with the commercials Are you listening now?”

“Mom, I left there seven months ago. I am an Assistant Director for Donnelly, Davis, and Gleason Accounting Services.”

“In Houston?!”

“No, Mom. In Dallas. Alistair Cromwell is the CEO of my company. Surely you knew that?”

“I know he is an accounting big wig but I never asked him for a business card or resume. He bought one of my listings in the Dallas area on Lake Ray Hubbard and another one near Austin on Lake Travis. He’s been a client and a friend for several years. He has purchased half a
